CragsideThe local area has a wealth of interesting things to see and do. The nearby Cragside house and estate is famous for being the first home to be powered by hydro electricity. The house was built between 1864 and 1884 by Lord Armstrong, and is open to the public between March and November.

The nearby town of Alnwick is dominated by the medieval castle, home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland. The castle, open to the public, recently found fame as the setting for the Harry Potter movies.

Alnwick CastleThe Alnwick Garden is a spectacular new garden within the castle grounds, and features water displays, a newly opened pavilion and the largest tree house in Europe. The garden is open every day of the year except Christmas day.

If visiting places of historic interest is your thing, there are a number of medieval castles in the region, namely; Alnwick, Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh and Chillingham. These are all open to the public, throughout the year, and are well worth a visit.

Millenium Bridge - QuaysideThe majority of castles in Northumberland are situated near it's heritage coastline. Northumberland has miles upon miles of golden sandy beaches, with the odd rocky one too!

Whilst in the area, a day on the coast is a must; it's roughly a thirty minute drive, but it is well worth it. Alnmouth, Warkworth, Embleton and Bamburgh beaches are amongst Northumberland's finest.

If you miss the hustle and bustle of the city, or like to shop on a grander scale, then head south towards the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne. Newcastle offers some fantastic and varied restaurants, shops, and is renowned for its lively nightlife. Other attractions include: the Baltic art gallery, the Millennium Bridge and the famous Quayside.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in Northumberland, but you don't need to travel far to enjoy yourself, Wingates is a fantastic area to take a stroll, we have several footpaths leading from Wingates into the local countryside.

If you would like to find out about more about things to do and places to see during your stay, we'll be more than happy to advise you.
